캐나다의 수도. 온타리오 주 남동쪽에 있으며 오타와·가티노·리도 강의 합류지점에 있습니다. 오타와 대도시권은 온타리오-퀘벡 주 경계지역에 걸쳐 있습니다.
현재 오타와가 된 지역에 대한 기록은 뉴프랑스를 건설한 사뮈엘 드 샹플랭에 의해 1613년에 씌어져 처음으로 유럽 세계에 알려졌습니다. 그후 2세기 동안 이 근처의 강들은 탐험가들과 교역상들의 여행로로 이용되었습니다. 나폴레옹 전쟁 때는 영국이 대량의 조선용 목재자원을 오타와 강 유역에서 조달하기도 했습니다. 1800년 필레몬 라이트라는 미국인이 지금의 헐 시가 된 오타와 강 건너편에서 벌목업을 시작했습니다. 1812년전쟁중 영국인들은 리도 강을 이용해 오타와 강에서 온타리오 호 연안의 킹스턴까지 안전하게 항해할 수 있었으며, 이 때문에 오타와의 개발이 촉진되었습니다. 1826년 영국 공병대의 존 바이 중령이 도착하면서 운하를 건설하는 작업이 가속화되기 시작했고, 당시 작업의 지휘본부가 자리잡았던 곳은 바이타운이라는 이름의 읍이 되었습니다.
오타와의 중요한 문화의 중심으로서 3개의 대학교를 들 수 있습니다. 오타와대학교와 세인트폴대학교는 2개 국어를 사용하고, 칼턴대학교에서는 영어로만 강의합니다. 큰 규모를 자랑하는 알공킨지역사회대학에서는 기술교육을 담당합니다. 오페라 극장과 영화관 2개를 갖춘 국립예술센터, 국립도서관 겸 공문서보관소, 국립과학기술박물관, 캐나다 국립미술관 등도 있습니다. 인구：시 774,072(2001), 오타와-헐 대도시권 1,010,498(1996).
